The washer fills and the wash plate moves, but the basket never spins up, often with a grinding noise and an F7E1 or F7E5 code.
Cabrio and similar Whirlpool top-loaders use a shift actuator and a “splutch” to switch between agitating and spinning. The codes are not the same fault: F7E5 is a shifter fault, where the transmission will not go into spin or agitate, while F7E1 is a basket speed sensor fault, from the sensor built into that same actuator. Both often end at the actuator, but they ask you to check different things first. Parts documentation describes the failure as “an awful lot of grinding noise, and the tub and agitator operate at a slow speed, if at all” — though a garment wedged between impeller and basket imitates it with nothing broken.
Connectors and harness are checked first, then the slider and actuator arm. The actuator motor is testable rather than swapped on suspicion — parts documentation cites roughly 2,000 to 3,500 ohms for the shifter motor. If an item is binding the basket, it comes out and no part is needed.
The fresh food compartment drifts warm while the freezer stays cold, or water appears under the crisper drawers.
Both symptoms commonly trace to the same defrost circuit. A defrost heater that “fails or does not generate sufficient heat” leaves frost partly melted, and the meltwater “can cause melted frost to refreeze in the drain tube” until it “will gradually block the drain” and water overflows the pan. An inaccurate defrost thermostat does the same. That ice also explains the warm side: “a buildup of ice on the evaporator will cause uneven temperatures. The freezer may still be cold, but the fresh food compartment may start to warm up.” A failing evaporator fan shows as poor fridge cooling first.
The drain and pan are inspected for ice and flushed clear. Heater and thermostat are tested rather than replaced on suspicion, and the evaporator fan checked under power. Clearing a blocked drain is a very different job from a sealed-system repair, and diagnosis must establish which it is.
The oven heats for a while then throws F3E2 and shuts the element down, or never reaches the set temperature.
F3E2 points at the oven temperature sensor, the electronic control, or the harness between them. It is one of the more testable Whirlpool codes, because the sensor unplugs and can be measured: Whirlpool parts documentation for the sealed RTD sensor gives 1,080 to 1,100 ohms at room temperature, and iFixit’s oven guide cites about 1,050 to 1,100 for the same check. Forum threads also record the case where the sensor was replaced and “it still does the same,” leaving the control board — the argument for measuring before ordering.
The sensor is measured against its published resistance before any part is ordered, and the harness traced for damage. Published diagnostics also check the terminal block and bake element, cited at roughly 20 to 40 ohms when healthy. The board is condemned only once sensor, harness and element test good.
The water dispenser still works, but the ice maker produces nothing, or the dispenser jams on a solid lump instead of cubes.
Whirlpool troubleshooting documentation lists several causes that look identical from the front. Above 10°F the ice maker “will not work properly,” and it works best between 0 and 5°F. Often the fill tube itself is frozen, which is exactly why the dispenser keeps working while the ice maker sits dead. The inlet valve is “designed to work with a minimum of 20 psi,” so weak supply imitates a failed valve — and these units use “an infrared light beam to detect the level of ice,” so a failed level control board stops production even when the water side is healthy.
Freezer temperature is confirmed first, then the fill tube for ice, then the inlet valve and supply pressure. The infrared level sensor is tested before the ice maker assembly is replaced, because an ice maker told the bucket is full behaves like a broken one.
