A refrigerator not cooling should first be checked for the four things manufacturers list up front: a store demo mode that shuts cooling off while the lights still work, a control turned down or off, blocked airflow, and a defrost cycle in progress. Once those are ruled out, the documented parts to test are the evaporator fan, the defrost system, the start and overload relays, the sensors and control board, and last the sealed system.

The freezer still feels cold, but milk on the fresh food shelves is lukewarm.
iFixit explains that this fan pulls air across the cooling coils and pushes it into both compartments, so when it quits the freezer may stay cold while the refrigerator warms. A damper that meters air from freezer to fresh food on single-evaporator designs gives the same result when stuck closed.
We check whether the blade turns freely, test the motor and inspect the damper.
The fresh food side warms while frost or ice crystals coat the panel at the back of the freezer.
iFixit states that an evaporator cover covered in ice crystals means the defrost system has a problem. The parts involved are a heater that melts frost off the evaporator fins, a timer, a thermostat and a thermal fuse.
We test the heater, thermostat and fuse for continuity and confirm a defrost actually starts, so frost does not rebuild.
Both compartments drift warmer together, and the refrigerator seems to work harder than it used to.
iFixit says a stopped condenser fan or dusty coils keep the refrigerator from cooling properly. Cleaning advice differs by brand: GE says most refrigerators built since 2001 have coils that do not require cleaning, except compact and smaller top-freezer models, while Whirlpool says its coils may need cleaning as often as every other month depending on the operating environment.
We clean the coils and confirm the fan motor runs at speed.
The light works and a fan may run, but the compressor never settles into running, and there is a click from the back instead.
iFixit describes the start relay as a small device on the side of the compressor that powers the start winding for a split second at startup; when it is defective, the compressor may run intermittently or not at all. Its overload relay section covers fans running with a compressor that will not start, or a clicking sound. Not every click is a fault: GE notes that after a short outage the overload cycles on and off until the refrigerant system equalizes.
We rule out post-outage cycling, then test relay, overload and start capacitor before judging the compressor.
Fans and compressor both run, the coils are clean, the freezer wall is clear of frost, and the temperature still will not come down.
iFixit lists a faulty thermistor, which reports air temperature to the control, and a temperature control board that supplies voltage to the fans and compressor. Beyond those, it says a refrigerant leak leaves the refrigerator unable to hold temperature, and that case calls for a service technician.
We read the thermistor against the model’s chart and check board outputs before naming a sealed-system fault. A refrigerant leak goes to a service technician, as iFixit advises.
