Freezer Loud Noise and Not Cooling? Freezer and Fridge Repair in Katy, Richmond, Fulshear, Sugar Land & Rosenberg, TX

A freezer loud noise that comes with rising temperatures points to a fan blade striking ice, a worn or obstructed fan, or a compressor that clicks without starting, while gurgling, popping, whooshing and soft clicks on their own are sounds GE, Whirlpool and LG list as normal. The difference that matters is whether the cabinet still holds temperature.

Stand in front of the unit while the sound is happening and note three things: what it sounds like, whether it stops when you open the freezer door, and whether a thermometer inside reads warmer than usual. Those answers point to the right part. Loud and warming together deserves a visit from Plug Fix Repair: (832) 598-8646.

What to Check First

Listening and looking only - no panels, no tools: Match it to the normal list.

Listening and looking only – no panels, no tools:

  • Match it to the normal list. GE counts boiling, gurgling and knocking from refrigerant, a click from the defrost timer, and fan speed changes after door openings as normal. Whirlpool adds popping walls and swooshing fans; its guide says clicking or tapping comes from relays and control boards switching.
  • Door test. Open the freezer while the noise is going. Samsung lists a fan hitting ice as a sound that stops when the door is opened.
  • Look, do not scrape. With the door open, glance at the rear wall; iFixit reads a frozen-over evaporator cover as a defrost fault.
  • Behind and underneath. Samsung suggests pulling the unit out an inch to see whether something behind it is rattling. Frigidaire says to take items off the top, keep the cabinet off the wall and re-level it if it rocks.
  • After an outage. GE says clicking from the compressor trying to restart can last 3 to 5 minutes after power returns.

Safety: Samsung warns never to use a hair dryer or any other heat source to speed defrosting. Leave any ice around the fan in place.

Common Causes of Freezer Loud Noise

Fan blade striking ice or frost

A scraping, ticking or rattling from inside the freezer that quits the moment the door opens, sometimes with the freezer slowly warming.

Samsung’s noise guide names this exact pattern, fan hitting ice that stops when the door is opened, and says a manual defrost removes the noise but only service corrects the original cause. GE calls any freezer sound like a fan blade hitting something not normal. LG describes continuous tapping from thick frost built up around the fan or a foreign object touching it.

We clear the ice, then find why it formed – a defrost heater, thermostat or control not doing its job.

Evaporator fan obstructed or failing

A whir, growl or clatter behind the freezer back wall that keeps going even with the ice cleared, and sometimes with the freezer reading warmer than normal.

LG says loose matter such as dust contacting the fan can make a clattering or rattling sound, and to contact service when a sound occurs irregularly or continuously. iFixit’s sounds guide says this fan can whir when food or ice blocks it, and its cooling guide says a motor that is unusually noisy, or a blade that will not spin freely, calls for a new motor.

We test the motor, check bearing drag and blade clearance, and replace the motor when it is noisy or stalls.

Condenser fan hitting debris

A flapping or whirring from underneath the cabinet rather than from inside the freezer.

GE compares it to a playing card hitting bicycle spokes and links it to debris reaching the condenser fan. iFixit says a dirty condenser fan can make the refrigerator hum or whir unusually, and that this fan moves air through the condenser coils, so a blocked one also costs cooling.

We clear debris from the blade, vacuum the coils and check that the motor spins up to speed.

Cabinet vibration, level or contact

A buzzing rattle or shaking that rises when the compressor runs, with no change in cooling.

Whirlpool attributes rattling or vibrating to refrigerant or water flow, items on top of the refrigerator, or a cabinet that is not level. LG links loud humming or shaking to a unit set too close to walls or on an uneven floor, and iFixit notes glass shelves that are not seated tend to vibrate.

We level the cabinet with two people, as LG advises, reseat loose shelves and move the unit clear of the wall.

Compressor clicking, knocking or failing to start

Repeated clicks from the back, a single hard knock at start-up, or a compressor that sounds harsh while both compartments warm.

iFixit says a failing compressor may make a single loud knocking sound as it begins to pump, and its cooling guide files clicking, or fans running while the compressor stays silent, under the overload relay. GE’s normal exception: once power returns, restart clicking can last 3 to 5 minutes.

We time the clicks, test relay and overload, and only then assess the compressor; sealed-system work stays with a technician.

Same-Day Help for Freezer Loud Noise

Appointments are usually available same-day or next-day, depending on technician availability and your location. For same-day service we normally provide a 2–3 hour arrival window and call you about 20–30 minutes before the technician arrives.
