An ice maker that stays empty is usually switched off, starved of water, fed through a clogged filter, or sitting in a freezer that is too warm. GE, Samsung, LG and Whirlpool open their no-ice guides with those items, and each takes minutes to check. When all four check out, the remaining documented causes include a frozen fill tube, a failed water inlet valve and the ice maker assembly.
Give a newly installed or recently unplugged unit time first: LG and Frigidaire say 24 hours, and GE allows 24 to 48 hours before the icemaker signals the water valve. If the ice maker is on, the supply valve is open, the filter is current, the freezer holds 0°F and the tray is still dry the next day, call Plug Fix Repair at (832) 598-8646.

Safety: Samsung warns owners not to try defrosting the ice maker, since that may damage it. If water is also reaching the floor, GE says to turn the icemaker off, then close the supply valve by turning it clockwise.
The dispenser still pours water, but the ice mold stays dry, or cubes stop after a stretch of normal production.
GE calls a frozen fill tube rare, but when it happens no water reaches the icemaker. iFixit describes one route: a faulty door seal lets warm air in, the compressor overworks to hold temperature, and the resulting over-cooling can freeze the tip of the tube that feeds the ice maker.
We confirm water reaches the valve, locate the blockage, clear it without damaging the mold, then look for the reason it froze.
No water at the ice maker and little or none at the dispenser, sometimes with a rattle from the water valve.
iFixit describes the inlet valve as an electrically controlled valve that feeds both the dispenser and the ice maker, designed for a minimum of 20 psi, with 500 Ω to 1.5 kΩ as a normal coil reading. GE says its valve rattles when the icemaker is on but no water is supplied.
Pressure at the line comes first, then a meter on the valve coil. A reading outside iFixit’s range with good pressure and power points to replacing the valve, matched to the model number.
Cubes come out small, production drops, and the dispenser runs slower than it used to.
Maytag says an incorrectly installed filter reduces flow to the ice maker and causes small cubes or low production; KitchenAid says the same about a clogged one. Samsung rates its filters at about 300 gallons, roughly 6 months.
Whirlpool’s own test is to remove the filter and try dispensing. Where a model allows it we run that comparison, or fit a bypass plug where the design calls for one, then trace the tubing for kinks.
Ice forms slowly or not at all.
GE says cubes take longer or never form when the freezer is too warm. iFixit puts the best range at 0 to 5°F and flags anything above 10°F. GE adds that its icemaker must reach 16°F before a cycle begins, and suggests keeping the freezer 3/4 or more full.
We measure the real temperature rather than trusting the dial. If the freezer cannot reach setpoint, the job becomes a cooling diagnosis – see our refrigerator repair page.
Water arrives and the freezer is cold, yet the tray never harvests, or cubes sit frozen in the mold.
GE notes that a stuck ejector rake keeps the icemaker from completing its cycle. iFixit lists failures inside the unit itself: the assembly control module, the mold thermostat that triggers harvest, an infrared ice level control board, and plastic trays that turn brittle and crack.
We run the maker’s built-in test – Samsung’s test button chimes within about 10 seconds, LG’s is held for about 3 seconds – then check the thermostat and level board before replacing the assembly.
Appointments are usually available same-day or next-day, depending on technician availability and your location. For same-day service we normally provide a 2–3 hour arrival window and call you about 20–30 minutes before the technician arrives.
GE - check that the icemaker cord is plugged in at the freezer wall. Samsung - needs a 0°F or colder freezer and 20 psi; do not defrost the ice maker yourself. LG - no ice 4-6 hours after its reset means repair service is needed. Whirlpool - reset by unplugging for 1 minute. Frigidaire - ice frozen around the auger has its own thaw routine. KitchenAid - filter every 6 months or when the light comes on. Maytag - small
No-ice visits are typically same-day or next-day; the exact slot hinges on technician availability and where you live. A same-day booking means a 2-3 hour window, with a phone call roughly 20-30 minutes before arrival. Lines at (832) 598-8646 are open Monday-Saturday, 7:00 AM-7:00 PM, and we confirm availability based on your ZIP code.

A powered display says nothing about the ice maker itself. Look for an Ice Off indicator or a locked display, and check that the feeler arm is down.
Possibly. GE says the water valve rattles when the icemaker is on but no water reaches it. Check that the supply valve is open and the filter is not blocked; if the noise continues, the valve needs testing.
LG and Frigidaire say 24 hours. GE allows 24-48 hours for a new installation to reach temperature. After a Whirlpool reset, the brand suggests waiting a couple of hours before checking.
Samsung tells owners not to try defrosting the ice maker because it may be damaged. Frigidaire's documented routine for a frozen auger is different: CRUSHED setting, bucket out, paddle pressed in 2-minute intervals 3 times.
