Dryer Won't Start: Troubleshooting and Repair for Katy, Richmond, Fulshear, Sugar Land & Rosenberg, TX

When a dryer won’t start, it is either missing power, being held back by a lock or an unlatched door, or has lost a part in its start circuit – and whether the display lights up tells you which half to check. A dark panel means plug, outlet and breakers first. A lit panel with a still drum points to latches, locks and the Start button, then to parts inside: door switch, start switch, thermal fuse, belt or motor.

After a storm or outage, LG says its PF code usually follows a power outage, and Samsung notes an electric circuit can, in rare cases, be half-tripped. Run those resets first. If the dryer still sits silent, or it hums and the drum will not turn, call Plug Fix Repair at (832) 598-8646 with the brand and whether it is gas or electric.

What to Check First

Everything here is done from the front of the dryer or at the breaker box: Breakers.

Everything here is done from the front of the dryer or at the breaker box:

  • Breakers. Electric dryers use two household fuses or breakers and gas dryers one, per Whirlpool. Samsung says an electric circuit can, in rare cases, be half-tripped: power off both circuits for 30 seconds.
  • Plug and outlet, by eye. GE asks that the plug be pushed completely into the wall. With the breaker off and the cord unplugged, Samsung says look for burn marks on plug, cord and outlet – and if you find damage, stop and call an electrician.
  • Door. Push it shut: Whirlpool and Maytag say some models have an upper and lower latch, and both must be secure. For LG’s dE code, make sure the lint filter is fully inserted and no clothing is caught.
  • Start button. Hold Start for two to five seconds; Maytag says just tapping may not engage the motor.
  • Locks. Whirlpool and Maytag: if Controls Locked is lit, hold Cycle Signal for three seconds. LG: hold Child Lock 3 seconds. Samsung: hold its two labeled buttons 3 or more seconds.
  • Cycle knob. Maytag says the knob must be on an Automatic Dry or Timed Dry cycle; some models will not start on the Wrinkle Reduction option.

Safety: Whirlpool says to unplug the dryer before its terminal screws are checked; leave that connection at the back to a technician or electrician. With a gas model, an odor of gas overrides every step here: CenterPoint Energy says get out on foot right away, use no phone and nothing that might spark, and phone CenterPoint and 911 after you reach safety.

Common Causes of Dryer Won't Start

Power supply after an outage, breaker trip or damaged cord

Nothing lights and no button responds, for example after a thunderstorm outage; some LG units show PF.

LG’s fix for PF is a reset: unplug, hold Start/Pause for 5 seconds, then restore power. GE says the dryer belongs on a separate, dedicated circuit and lists a broken, burned or loose connection where the cord meets the back of the dryer.

iFixit’s benchmark for an electric receptacle is 240V between the two line contacts. We measure there, then inspect the terminal block with the dryer unplugged. A fault in the outlet or the house panel goes to an electrician.

Door switch or door latch

The panel responds, perhaps with a humming timer, but pressing Start does nothing; or the drum light no longer reacts to the door.

iFixit says a bad door switch on older or simpler dryers makes the dryer act completely dead, while other models show signs of life, like a humming timer motor. GE warns a scorched or pushed-in door switch may stop the dryer from running.

GE suggests owners look at the switch through the open door; testing it happens with the dryer unplugged.

Start switch or main control board

On a dryer with a mechanical push button or knob, pressing or turning it produces no response at all.

iFixit says a start switch that fails leaves the dryer unable to start, and that is the part to check on push-button and knob models. It rates the control board as the least likely of the usual failures, noting corrosion on its cables from humid air can make a dryer seem completely dead.

We confirm the switch closes when pressed and check board cables for corrosion before any board is ordered.

Thermal fuse on models where it stops the motor

The dryer went dead in the middle of a load and now shows no response to Start.

According to iFixit, virtually all dryers are designed so a blown thermal fuse keeps the motor from running, and it calls checking every exhaust duct for lint an extremely good idea when one blows. Models that keep tumbling without heat belong on our dryer not heating page.

With the dryer unplugged, we check the fuse for continuity and clear the lint path before a new fuse goes in.

Drive belt, idler pulley, drum rollers or motor

The dryer powers on and the motor may run, but the drum stays still; turned by hand, it spins loosely or feels stiff.

iFixit calls a running motor with a still drum a sure sign of a belt problem, and a drum that spins very easily by hand suggests a broken belt. A worn drum bearing makes the drum very difficult to turn. The belt switch shuts the dryer down when the belt breaks. Samsung says that in most cases, if its timer counts down but the drum is not spinning, service is required.

We open the cabinet with the dryer unplugged and check belt, idler tension, rollers, blower wheel and belt switch, then the motor. iFixit’s Whirlpool guide gives 2.4 to 3.8 ohms for a good motor reading.

Same-Day Help for Dryer Won't Start

Appointments are usually available same-day or next-day, depending on technician availability and your location. For same-day service we normally provide a 2–3 hour arrival window and call you about 20–30 minutes before the technician arrives.

Brand Notes

GE : on some 2019 and newer models, a 1 or 2 in the display means the dryer needs its personality setting - 1 for electric, 2 for gas, toggled with START. Its Control Lock releases with Extended Tumble plus minus, or the Light pad, held 3 seconds. LG : Child Lock stays on at the end of a cycle even with the machine powered off. For the hard reset, LG turns the breaker off, unplugs, then holds POWER/START and PLAY/PAU

  • Samsung: gas dryers need a 15 amp circuit, electric models 30 amps on a 240-volt outlet.
  • Whirlpool: an electric model without a 240-volt supply will not work correctly.
  • Maytag: Wrinkle Reduction selected on some models blocks the start.
