The dishwasher quits partway through, beeps, and shows F8E4. There may be no puddle on the floor at all.
Water collecting under the tub lifts a float, stopping the machine before the leak reaches the floor. Whirlpool’s product help pages send you to the drip tray first — “if you see water in the drip tray, it must be emptied” — then the connection points, the float switch, and detergent, since “using the wrong type or too much detergent can cause over-sudsing.”

Whirlpool states the code means “your washer is not detecting the correct amount of incoming water.” The dead control is not a second fault — pressing power starts a drain routine of roughly eight to ten minutes during which “the control will not accept any input.” Causes run from valves not fully open to kinked or clogged hoses and mineral buildup on the inlet screens.
Valves, hoses and inlet screens are checked before the water valve is condemned, since a screen can be brushed clean while a valve has to be bought. The drain hose installation gets a look too.
