Ice maker frosts over and stops dropping ice

Ice production slows, then stops. Owners report a frost shell over the ice maker, cubes fused into a block, a bucket that will not slide out, and grinding as ice reaches the fan.

This belongs to Samsung refrigerators with the ice maker in the fresh-food door — a proposed class action over the design, Bianchi v. Samsung Electronics America, was filed in 2017 and dismissed in January 2024 after consumers accepted individual settlements. Samsung’s support material names the mechanism: warm, moist air getting inside and freezing. The routes it lists are a dispenser flap that does not close properly, a gap between ice bucket and chute, and a damaged or dirty bucket seal.

We check the flap seat and bucket-to-chute fit first, since those cost nothing to correct, then the bucket seal and drain. If the housing has cracked or its heater or sensor has failed, we quote the assembly. Samsung cautions that a hair dryer damages the refrigerator, so we never use one.

Washer shows 5C or 5E and will not drain

The cycle stops with standing water in the drum and the display reads 5C, or 5E on older panels. The buttons go dead, often mistaken for a failed control board.

Samsung documents 5E/5C as a drainage fault with two causes: a blocked filter or a kinked drain hose. The drain pump filter, behind the small access door at the bottom front, is the first place to look, since lint, coins and hairclips collect there. Samsung states the buttons are disabled for three minutes after the code appears, so a dead keypad then is expected, not a second fault. Worth separating from 4C/4E, a water supply problem: the two send you to opposite ends of the machine.

We clear the pump filter, confirm the impeller turns freely, then check drain hose routing and height at the standpipe. If both are correct, the diagnosis moves to the pump, its wiring and the sensor that tells the board whether the tub emptied.

Dishwasher shows LC or LE and will not switch off

The display reads LC or LE, and the dishwasher turns itself on and keeps trying to drain rather than switching off. Often there is no visible water on the floor, which confuses most owners.

Samsung documents LC/LE as a leakage error: the leak sensor has detected moisture, and the machine then runs continuously attempting to drain the water away. Samsung adds that on WaterWall models the same code can instead mean the water reflector is blocked. Because the sensor responds to moisture rather than a flood, the trigger is not always a failed seal.

We dry the base and sensor, then find where the moisture came from instead of clearing the code and leaving: door gasket, tub seal, drain connection and hose routing. On WaterWall machines we check the reflector before condemning the sensor.

Slide-in range knobs turn on by accident

A surface burner is found switched on when nobody set it, often after a pet jumps up or someone leans against the range. On slide-in models the knobs sit on the front face, making contact easy.

This is a documented safety recall, not a wear item. On 8 August 2024 Samsung and the CPSC recalled approximately 1,120,905 slide-in electric ranges sold May 2013 through August 2024, across 31 models, because front-mounted knobs can be activated by accidental contact by humans or pets. The record includes over 300 reports of unintentional activation since 2013, approximately 250 fires, around 40 injuries, and seven fires involving pet deaths.
