Washer Not Draining? Washing Machine Repair in Katy, Richmond, Fulshear, Sugar Land & Rosenberg, TX

A washer not draining has water trapped somewhere between the tub and your house drain: manufacturer guides point to a kinked or clogged drain hose, a hose pushed too far into the standpipe, a clogged pump filter on front-load models, excess suds, or a pump that no longer moves water. Samsung calls incorrect drain hose installation the most common reason for drain issues, so the hose comes first. Codes vary by brand: OE on LG, nd or 5C on Samsung, F9 E1 or drn on Whirlpool.

Top-load and front-load machines share nearly every step below, with one split: Samsung notes top loaders have no removable pump filter. If the hose and drain test clear, the filter is clean, and water still sits at the bottom or the machine only hums, call Plug Fix Repair at (832) 598-8646 and mention whether the washer loads from the top or the front.

What to Check First

Owner steps taken from the manufacturers' own drain guides: Wait out the pause.

Owner steps taken from the manufacturers’ own drain guides:

  • Wait out the pause. GE says many models pause for up to 3 minutes between cycles, and that is normal.
  • Hose behind the machine. LG asks you to confirm the hose is not bent, clogged or pinched between washer and wall. Whirlpool says do not tape it into the drainpipe; it needs an air gap.
  • Hose depth and height. Limits differ by brand. Whirlpool front-load models allow no more than 4.5 inches into the drainpipe; Samsung wants 6 to 8 inches, with the hose no higher than 96 inches.
  • House drain. GE’s test: lift the hose out of the standpipe and pour in a quart of water. If it will not go down, GE recommends a plumber.
  • Detergent. Whirlpool says non-HE detergent, or more than the recommended amount, makes excessive suds that slow the spin and leave loads very wet.
  • Lid and load. GE top-load washers will not spin with the lid up. Maytag says wipe detergent or lint build-up near the lid lock with a soft, damp cloth, and GE suggests spreading a lopsided load more evenly.

Safety: Samsung warns that after Sanitize or another hot cycle the trapped water may be very hot – allow about one hour before draining it. Unplug the washer before a filter is removed, as LG directs. Samsung also says not to remove the screw on the back that holds the drain hose.

Common Causes of Washer Not Draining

Drain hose kinked, clogged or set too deep

Water stays at the bottom after the cycle, loads come out dripping, or a long-drain code appears.

Whirlpool reads F9E1 on its top-load models as a Long Drain problem: a hose pushed beyond the elbow can cause siphoning, water draining back into the tub, or slow or no spin. Its drn alert adds that the hose end must be higher than 36 inches from the floor or the washer could siphon.

We clear or replace the hose and keep its original form, as Whirlpool directs. If GE’s quart test shows a blocked standpipe, that is plumbing work.

Clogged drain pump filter on a front-load model

A front-loader shows OE or 5C and holds water behind the door glass, while the pump can be heard working.

LG names a kinked hose or a clogged pump filter as the causes of OE. GE says small items from clothing or pockets end up there. Whirlpool notes that on some models the filter sits behind the bottom dispenser drawer, and that clogged drain holes inside the door seal slow draining too.

Where the manual shows an owner filter door, LG’s routine is: unplug, drain the small hose into a container, lay a towel down, turn the filter counterclockwise and rinse it in warm water. If it is already clean, we inspect the pump inlet and impeller.

Suds the pump cannot move

Foam is visible in the drum, the spin runs slowly, and clothes stay heavy with water.

Whirlpool says suds can sometimes stop the washer from pumping water and spinning. LG explains the mechanism: excess suds create air pockets the drain pump cannot remove. LG’s SUD code adds a suds-reducing cycle.

We confirm the detergent is HE and correctly dosed and run LG’s Tub Clean cycle. No part is replaced if the code stays away.

Lid lock, lid switch or unbalanced load blocking the spin

The washer fills and agitates but never spins, or a lid lock light flashes on a top-loader.

Whirlpool says the lid or door switch lets the washer run only with the lid securely closed. Maytag lists three reasons its Lid Lock light flashes: the lock has not moved into position, the lock motor cannot be powered, or something keeps the lid from closing. GE adds that a load bunched to one side can keep the tub from spinning water out.

We test the lock and switch circuit with power off.

Drain pump, pressure hose or control fault

The tub stays full with a clear hose and clean filter; the machine hums, or makes no pump sound at all.

iFixit lists a failed pump first; when it runs but no water moves, it points to a loose or broken impeller or a clog. An air leak or clog in the pressure hose can stop the machine sensing an empty tub. iFixit’s Whirlpool top-load guide adds a pump not receiving 120 volts from the control board. LG and GE both send owners to service when there is no pump hum, or only a hum.

We check the pump for debris and voltage, test the pressure hose and reseat control board connectors, as iFixit suggests, before replacing the board.

LE is different: the motor is overloaded and locked, and LG says to let it rest 30 minutes. Whirlpool : F9E1 on top-loaders, F9 E1 on front-loaders, drn as a long drain alert. Maytag : hold Start up to 3 seconds on some top-loaders. GE : a front-loader
