When a microwave runs but food stays cold, first rule out a setting that blocks heat – Demo mode, Control Lock, Timer used instead of a cook cycle, a low power level or Delay Start – and a door that is not fully closed. Whirlpool, GE and Samsung open their no-heat guides with those checks. If a cup of water still does not warm, Whirlpool says the unit needs service, and the remaining causes named by Whirlpool and PartSelect – door switch, high-voltage diode, magnetron – sit inside the cabinet.

Safety: do not remove the outer cabinet or try to test the magnetron, diode, fuse or capacitor. GE offers no do-it-yourself repair advice on microwave ovens for this reason. The FDA says not to use a microwave whose door does not close firmly or is bent, warped or damaged, and to contact the manufacturer when hinges, latches or seals are damaged.

PartSelect explains that the door switch, also called an interlock switch, tells other components to supply power when closed; when it fails, the fan and stirrer motors may still run, so the oven looks as if it works. Whirlpool connects the light symptoms to a damaged switch. The FDA requires two independent interlock systems that stop microwave production the moment the latch releases.
We first confirm the door hooks actually trigger the switch, as PartSelect’s procedure does. Whirlpool says replacement may mean disassembling the control panel and wiring, which we do only with the capacitor made safe.
The display, light and turntable behave normally through the whole countdown, and the water test shows no rise.
PartSelect describes the diode as the part that helps power the magnetron, so a failed one leaves an oven that turns on but does not heat. Whirlpool lists a broken high-voltage diode among the internal causes that call for a professional once settings are ruled out.
PartSelect notes that reaching the diode means removing the cabinet and discharging the high-voltage capacitor. That is exactly why this stays with a technician: we test it only after the stored charge is dealt with.

PartSelect calls the magnetron the part that makes the heat to cook food, and says a broken one may blow a fuse, which could lead to other components failing. Whirlpool names a defective magnetron as a professional-diagnosis item.
Because a bad magnetron can take other parts with it, we follow PartSelect’s order – confirm the diode works and the mounting bolts are tight – before condemning it, then explain the options so you can decide.
The microwave went dark or quit heating mid-cycle, and the breaker trips again after a reset.
Frigidaire says power surges can trip the breaker and cause electronic control issues, and that some cases are an electrical issue needing an electrician. Whirlpool’s instruction is firm: do not keep trying to operate the microwave if the breaker or fuse opens again. PartSelect links a blown internal fuse to a failing magnetron.
A fuse inside the oven is replaced only after finding what blew it. If the fault is in the house circuit rather than the appliance, we tell you it is an electrician’s job.
An over-the-range unit heats weakly or not at all, sometimes with the exhaust fan also not working.
Samsung’s no-heat guide says a microwave without enough clearance cannot vent properly, and over-the-range models must be installed per the manual. Whirlpool notes its vent fan can switch on by itself when the cooktop below gets too hot, so a fan running on its own is not always a fault. Samsung’s test for a weak vent: try every speed; if each setting sounds the same or the noise is abnormal, request service.
