Where the water collects narrows it down. First, wipe each line and fitting with a dry paper towel to find the wet one; if water keeps coming, turn the icemaker off and close the supply valve clockwise, as GE instructs. iFixit calls the defrost drain the first place to check when a refrigerator leaks. It can freeze or clog with debris, and top-mount freezers are more prone because the tube is long and runs behind the back wall.
On side-by-side models GE documents a flush: 1 tablespoon of baking soda in 2 cups of hot tap water, pushed in with a bulb baster until you hear it running into the pan. Most top-freezer GE models need disassembly to reach the tube, so we open the panel, thaw and flush, and check why it froze.
Water shows up under the front after defrost cycles even though the drain itself flows freely.
iFixit describes the defrost water tray under the refrigerator as able to crack or warp, leaking whenever the defrost cycle sends meltwater into it. Bosch’s cleaning guide confirms the path: water entering the drain hole runs into the evaporation tray.
We remove the bottom grille, pull the tray, inspect it and fill it with water to confirm a leak before replacing it.
A puddle toward the back or underneath, sometimes steady rather than tied to defrost.
GE says the valve on the refrigerator may be leaking or stuck in the on position, the copper line connected to it may be loose or split, and the plastic fill-line from the valve to the icemaker may be loose or split. Whirlpool adds cracked supply lines. Samsung says water pressure that is too high or too low may keep the valve from closing.
We trace the wet fitting, tighten or refit it, and replace the valve or fill-line if either is cracked. A damaged household line is plumbing work, as GE notes.
Drips inside the cabinet near the filter, often with slow or no water at the door.
Frigidaire says cracks in the filter cause leaking in the cabinet along with slow or no water at the door. Maytag lists worn O-rings, a cross-threaded filter and a cracked head. Whirlpool says impurities in water can break down the housing over time.
We inspect the O-ring and head for hairline cracks, reseat the cartridge, and replace the housing if it is cracked.
Water appears only when ice or water is dispensed, drips down the chute, or collects under the drawers after a glass is poured.
GE’s ice maker leak list covers loose fittings, the valve, a fill tube extension, an overflowing defrost drain and an unlevel cabinet. Frigidaire says ice in the chute can melt and run down it, and LG says to inspect the underside of the ice tray for damage.
