Samsung Dryer HC Code: Diagnosis and Repair in Katy, Richmond, Fulshear, Sugar Land & Rosenberg, TX

HC on a Samsung dryer belongs to a group of heating errors – HC, hE, HC4 and 1 HC – that Samsung defines as the dryer getting too hot, most commonly because a clogged lint screen or vent system is trapping heat. Samsung adds that the code can also appear when the heater is not hot enough due to low voltage on electric units, and a Samsung Canada page names a defective thermistor as the other suspect.

So start with the filter, the duct and the Vent Blockage test built into the control panel. If the result is clean and HC keeps returning, the fault is internal, and Samsung itself points owners to service. Call (832) 598-8646 with the model number from the label.

What to Check First

Samsung's sequence, ordered so the most frequent trigger is ruled out first: Filter.

Samsung’s sequence, ordered so the most frequent trigger is ruled out first:

  • Filter. Clean it before or after every cycle.
  • Vent Blockage test. Empty drum, door shut, machine cool (Samsung suggests Air Fluff if it is warm). Press POWER, then within 5 seconds hold Adjust Time Up + Dry Level until InS or In appears, then hold START/PAUSE. It takes approximately 2 minutes.
  • Reading it. 0 or End: normal. CLg, Cg, CL9, C9, C80, C8 or C90: cannot exhaust properly, with C8/C80 about 80% and C9/C90 about 90% clogged. C1 or CL1: laundry detected. dc: door open. Ct: internal temperature below freezing or above 104°F.
  • Duct layout. Sealed, not plastic or foil, within the manual’s maximum length – and each 90-degree turn cuts that maximum by 6 feet.
  • Supply. Electric models need a 240V outlet; with too little voltage the panel and motor may work while the heater does not, and Samsung says to have an electrician check. Samsung Canada reads 9C1 as abnormal voltage and says to check the unit is on its own circuit without an extension cord.

Safety: the CPSC warns lint build-up can cause excessive heat and, in some dryers, a fire – do not keep clearing HC and loading a duct that just failed the test. Reconnect any disconnected duct before the next load.

Common Causes of Samsung Dryer HC Code

Lint and a restricted exhaust run

HC appears partway through, clothes feel hot but damp, and airflow at the outside wall cap is weak.

This is the cause Samsung lists first. The CPSC explains why flexible plastic or foil ducting matters: it traps lint more easily and kinks or crushes, greatly reducing airflow.

We run the Vent Blockage test before and after clearing. For a restricted reading, Samsung Canada says to contact the installer on a recent installation, otherwise have a duct cleaner clean and test the run before requesting service.

Duct tests clean but HC returns: thermistor

The test shows 0 or End, the filter is spotless, and the heating error still returns. Samsung lists tS, tC, tO and tE as temperature or sensor codes.

Samsung Canada names the two failures behind hE/hC on a regular electric unit: a restricted vent or a defective thermistor. iFixit says most Samsung models use thermistors instead of thermostats, frequently two, and a reading off by more than 5% for the temperature means replacement.

Both sensors are measured against a temperature chart and the harness to the board is inspected.

Low voltage or one tripped circuit on an electric model

Display and drum work normally, the air stays lukewarm, and HC follows.

Samsung ties HC to a heater that is not hot enough because of low voltage. Its no-heat guide notes electric units have two circuits that can trip separately and suggests breaker off, 30 seconds, then on.

We confirm the cord and terminal block at the dryer with power off. If the house supply itself reads low, that is an electrician’s job, and we say so.

Heater assembly, thermal cutoff or hi-limit thermostat

No warmth at all during Samsung’s heat check, with supply confirmed and duct clear.

iFixit maps the Samsung layout: the electric thermal cutoff sits toward the front on the heater assembly, the hi-limit thermostat on the heater box beside the element terminals, and on gas units the hi-limit is on the burner cone. A healthy element reads 10 to 30 ohms across the contacts.

Continuity on cutoff and hi-limit, resistance on the element. An open cutoff sends us back to airflow, because that part reacted to heat with nowhere to go.

hC2 on gas models, or an electronics fault

A gas unit shows hC2, or every sensor and heater part checks out and the code persists.

Samsung Canada lists hC2 on gas dryers as failed gas ignition. Its reset for hC2: disconnect power, hold the power button 10 seconds, wait 2 minutes, restart – and book service if it repeats. iFixit adds that on newer Samsung dryers the valve coils come only with a replacement gas valve, and lists the main control board among remaining causes.

On gas we confirm the line is connected and on, as Samsung instructs, then watch an ignition attempt. The board is judged last.
