Dryer Not Heating? Diagnosis and Repair in Katy, Richmond, Fulshear, Sugar Land & Rosenberg, TX

When a dryer tumbles but stays cold, the causes manufacturers and repair guides document fall into three groups: it is not getting full power or gas, exhaust airflow is choked, or a heat-circuit part has opened. Whirlpool and Maytag explain that an electric model’s motor and heating element run on separate sides of a two-breaker, 240-volt circuit, so one tripped side leaves the drum turning with no heat. On gas models, Whirlpool notes the drum still turns with the shutoff valve closed.

Cycle setting, breaker handles, gas shutoff and lint path can all be checked without opening the cabinet. If it is still cold after that, the remaining suspects sit behind panels and need a meter. Call Plug Fix Repair at (832) 598-8646 with the model number and fuel type.

What to Check First

Checks the manufacturers publish for owners, none of which involve removing a panel: Cycle choice.

Checks the manufacturers publish for owners, none of which involve removing a panel:

  • Cycle choice. Whirlpool and Maytag state that Air Only or Air/Fluff Only never adds heat. Their test: empty drum, a heated timed cycle, 5 minutes, then feel inside.
  • Both breakers (electric). GE warns a breaker can be partially tripped without looking it, so switch it fully off and back on. An electric model may run on 120 volts, GE adds, but will not heat without 208V/240V.
  • Gas shutoff (gas). Per Whirlpool, the valve handle should sit parallel to the pipe. After a new installation, GE says to confirm the gas line was turned on.
  • Lint screen. The CPSC advises cleaning it before or after each load; still-damp clothing or longer drying may mean the screen or duct is blocked.
  • Outside exhaust. While the dryer runs, the CPSC says to confirm air is escaping at the outside vent, and recommends rigid or corrugated semi-rigid metal duct over plastic or foil accordion duct.

Safety: the cord’s terminal screws sit behind a cover, and Whirlpool says to unplug the dryer before they are checked – leave that step to the installer or a technician. If you smell gas, CenterPoint Energy advises leaving immediately on foot, avoiding anything that could spark, including a cell phone, and calling the utility and 911 once safe.

Common Causes of Dryer Not Heating

Thermal fuse or thermal cutoff has blown

One load came out cold. Depending on design, the drum still turns, or the machine will not start at all.

Both are one-time safety parts. iFixit’s Whirlpool guide says a blown thermal fuse usually stops the machine from running, while a blown cutoff often leaves it spinning without heat; the cutoff sits near the elements on electric units and on the duct where heated air enters the drum on gas units. iFixit’s general guide adds that a blown fuse points to clogged exhaust ducts or lint in the blower wheel.

We check continuity on both, and when one is open we look for why: lint in the blower wheel and the duct out to the wall cap. A new fuse on a restricted duct is being asked to trip again.

Open heating element on an electric dryer

The drum turns and the timer counts down, but air from the drum stays at room temperature with both breakers on.

The coil can burn through. iFixit’s targets vary by family: about 10 ohms in its general electric guide, 10-20 ohms for Whirlpool (over 50 or an open circuit means replacement), and 10-30 ohms for Samsung. Since the element needs both halves of the 240-volt supply, a half-tripped breaker looks identical from the front.

With the cord unplugged we meter the element against your model’s range and confirm the terminal block connections are tight before ordering a part.

Cycling thermostat, hi-limit thermostat or thermistor

Heat is weak, comes and goes, or quits early – or a replaced fuse blew again.

These parts regulate temperature rather than produce it. iFixit says a cycling thermostat can stick open so the dryer acts as if it is already warm enough, and a hi-limit that fails and sticks makes the fuse or cutoff blow as backup. Some models use a thermistor that reports temperature to the board; iFixit says its correct room-temperature reading comes from the tech sheet.

Thermostats are tested for continuity at room temperature, and the thermistor is compared with the value for that model, not a generic figure.

Gas igniter, flame sensor or valve coils

A gas unit with the shutoff open never warms. During an ignition attempt, the igniter either never glows or glows with no flame following.

iFixit’s timing rule: a glow lasting up to about two minutes that goes out without flame points to the valve coils; a glow of around five minutes with no flame points to the flame (radiant) sensor. It gives roughly 80-400 ohms for a good igniter and 500-1500 ohms for the coils. On newer Samsung gas models, the coils come only as part of a replacement valve.

We watch one ignition attempt first, since glow timing narrows the fault, then meter igniter, sensor and coils with power off.

Timer, centrifugal switch or main control board

Supply, fuse, element and thermostats all test good, yet the heat circuit never receives power.

iFixit ranks these as less common. The motor’s centrifugal switch also completes the heating element circuit, so a worn switch can let the drum run cold. iFixit’s Whirlpool and Samsung pages both list a defective main control board.

Following iFixit’s advice, we check for voltage at the heating and motor circuits before replacing a timer or board.

Same-Day Help for Dryer Not Heating

Appointments are usually available same-day or next-day, depending on technician availability and your location. For same-day service we normally provide a 2–3 hour arrival window and call you about 20–30 minutes before the technician arrives.

  • GE: its no-heat guide lists a burned, broken or loose power cord connection at the back of the dryer; reaching it means removing the terminal cover, so that check belongs to a technician.
