Frost spreads over the ice maker housing from the chute side and dispensing slows to a trickle.
Samsung traces this frost to warm refrigerator air slipping into the ice compartment. One route it singles out is the black flap inside the ice chute: seated correctly, Samsung says, it lies flush against the housing and is airtight. A sliver of ice or debris wedged under that flap holds it open and lets moist air through.
We inspect the flap, remove whatever is propping it, and check it falls back flush on its own. If the flap seats and frost still returns, the bucket seal and chute alignment are next.
This is past a light dusting: the ice maker is encased, the bucket has frozen to it, and the dispenser gives nothing at all.
Samsung grades the clean-up by severity. Light frost wipes away with a damp cloth that is then dried; medium frost can be eased off with a plastic scraper; heavy accumulation calls for a defrost cycle. It adds a firm warning – a hair dryer will damage the refrigerator.

That behaviour is the subject of a CPSC recall announced on 8 August 2024: about 1,120,905 Samsung slide-in electric ranges from 31 models, sold between May 2013 and August 2024, whose front-mounted knobs can be activated by accidental contact by humans or pets, posing a fire hazard. The notice reports approximately 250 fires and approximately 40 injuries.
This goes to Samsung, not to a repair booking: the CPSC notice tells owners to contact Samsung for knob locks or covers compatible with their model, at 833-775-0120 or through Samsung’s range knob kit page. A genuine fault on that range – a cold element, dead controls – is a repair we handle.
A code flashes – 5C, say – and pressing Start, Power or anything else does nothing, which looks like a failed board.
Samsung builds in a lockout: after a drainage code posts, the buttons stay disabled for three minutes. 5C itself means the washer could not get rid of its water, traced by Samsung to a blocked filter, a kinked hose or a poorly installed one. 4C belongs to a different fault family – the water supply – so reading the digit correctly sends you to the right end of the machine.
We let the lockout run out, then work through filter, hose and connection before anyone suspects the board.
